Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe. Portugal’s first king was Afanso Hernriques, in year 1140. Henriques wrested power from his mother in 1128. Portugal gained its independence in 1143, after centuries of struggle with the Spanish states (provinces).
Portugal is known for its explorers and by 1337 they landed on the Canary Islands. Shortly after, many Portuguese explorers made expeditions to Brazil, India, and Japan, and Portugal built a colonial empire with territories all over the world. On June 30th 1911, the country's flag design was officially embraced. The color green stands for hope, desire, aspiration, and expectation for the country. The color red is the blood of men and women who sacrificed their life to protect, secure, shield, guard and protect the country. |
