In 800 BC the Greeks settled in the south and the Etruscans settled in central Italy. Later on the Etruscans formed a group of states called Etruria. Meanwhile, the Latin and Sabine people settled to create what is modern day’s Rome.
In 510 BC when the Romans took over the Etruscans, the Roman Empire stretched from Portugal to Syria to Britain to North Africa. In 27 BC the first sole emperor of Rome, Octavian, known as Augustus Caesar took reign. For more than 400 years the empire prospered. In 395 AD the Roman Empire was broken apart by Germanic tribes, but luckily in the 12th century the Italian city- states once again flourished. Italy’s territory was split up, by many different foreign dynasties. In 1861 the kingdom of Italy was proclaimed. One of the most famous and historic Romans is Julius Caesar. He had many victories in Gaul, which brought new territories to the Roman Empire. He led expeditions into Britain and Germany, which was not typical for Romans of that time period. The month July is named after him. This is one of the famous people that lived in Italy Guglielmo Marconi
